Background:	Different classes of nonsymbiotic plant hemoglobins have been identified and divided into class 1 (Hb1) (AT2G16060) and class 2 (Hb2) based on phylogenetic characteristics, gene expression patterns, and oxygen-binding properties. Hb2 might act as an oxygen sensor or play a role in electron transfer, possibly to a bound oxygen molecule.
