Background:	ESK1 is a member of a large gene family of DUF231 domain proteins whose members encode a total of 45 proteins of unknown function. ESK1 is a plant-specific polysaccharide O-acetyltransferase that is involved in xylan acetylation, and has also been described as a key negative regulator of freezing, salt tolerance and water economy.
