Background:	UBC19 is one of two ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes belonging to the E2-C gene family (the other being UBC19). UBC19 is able to complement fission yeast UbcP4-140 mutant, indicating that the plant protein can functionally replace its yeast ortholog for protein degradation during mitosis. Arabidopsis includes two proteins belonging to the E2-C gene family: UBC19 (AT3G20060), UBC20 (AT1G50490).
